Engine - Done!

another great day - been over with Toddy and
got my engine done and dusted....

its in my boot ready to rock and roll! cheers Mr T,
 your a gem!

Monday 28 March 2011

What a day!

its about time I got this baby finished!
Cleared my diary for a couple of days to get working on it.

Had a brilliant day out in the shed on it today - totally buzzing
with it and cant wait to get back out there working on it!

Started to make the oil tank mount the other day when i put

my knee out - so picked that back up again today....

had some threaded bungs arrive this morning, just in the nick

of time. The ones I got previously were M6 and M4, so a bit
on the light weight side of things. I got an M10 for this job -
nice and sturdy. first job was to drill the frame..

took bloody ages to get the hole the right size, biggest drill I

had was a 12mm, and the bung 22mm in diameter. true to form
I couldn't find the grinding burrs, so it was an hour with the
air grinder thing with various attachments to make the hole
bigger...

proper had the shakes today (probably the weekends beer

wearing off) so my welding looked pretty shit to start out
(it got better through the day)

Made a tab to weld the arm of the oil tank too

then with the magnetic hands (as I call them) holding the

tank in place I was able to tack it in place...

One arm wouldn't hold it so I made some extra supports for

under the seat, and did a bit of weld - filling to neaten it up
a bit....

more bung welding - this time i just cut the hole out with a

grinder...

and then welded it all up

Didn't take so many pics as the afternoon progressed, but

again more bungs, and the number plate mount and light
mounted at the back of the frame...

Next up I needed a tray to fix the old camera box that will

hold my battery. Nice little sheet metal project that!

again full use of the magnetic hands was needed:-

here is the tray neatened up

more bungs (M6 this time)

So at the end of a great day, I have numerous burns on my

fingers, my knee is knackered again but I've a massive smile
on my face! The Relic is really starting to take shape!

Hopefully gonna have the engine finished tomorrow and will

be speaking to the zen master about finishing off the forward
controls!

Forwards - HELP!

I'm making forwards for the Relic - I have most of the parts I need - but need
a bit of help with getting it all together properly...

So far I have the pedals made for both sides, 19mm stainless steel bar for the
spindle, bodies with brass bushes to act as the bearing, and these old Lycett
pegs that I want to use....

the plan is to assemble this lot something like this:-

I'm aware that I need the bearing to have minimal side to side movement,
while not hindering the movement around the axis of the spindle.  As I like
to sketch things out this is my current plan:-

The drawing has the stainless bar broken so that you can see how it goes
together. Basically the bar will be welded onto stainless plates on the bike
side. I have proposed a split pin to be used to hold the bush in the right
place (may need a washer between it and the bush?!?)

then I intend to make a small bracket to mount the pedal to...

Now as for attaching that, i first thought of welding it on, but that would mean
the assembly couldn't be dismantled, so maybe it would be threaded
through the top of the bar???

Just wondering if that over complicates things?

If anyone has a better suggestion for me please fire away......

Change of perspective

Had a bit of of time away from the bike the last couple of weeks,
put things in perspective and I'm pretty clear on how to get it done now!

A few changes:-

Wide yokes are gone, as is the wide front tyre. Opting for a 21 front,

this is a twin leader wheel, cable operated, and stops me having to
worry about cable operated hydraulic master cylinders etc...

These yokes dont quite fit, as they aren't xs ones, but were back

skinny!

These are the wheels I'm going with, 21 front with 3.00 tyre, and the 19x550 rear...

Finally, the fakey oil tank will just be electrics now, I picked up a camera

box to hold the battery now which kinda matches the seat....

I know it's on the wrong side via if the chain, but should fill the gap nicely!

Scored a Minter!

Scored this off ebay this week:-

Haven't got it in my hands yet - but it'll be winging its way to me on Monday.
Apparently its pretty bloody clean!
